Behind the drawing
In 1983, I was in an Oklahoma hotel room, relaxing after a long day at the art fair where I was exhibiting my work. On TV, I saw an ad for Silver Dollar City, an arts and crafts theme park in Missouri. Intrigued by the images on the screen, I decided to take a detour after the end of the show.
The Woodworker is based on one of the artisans in Silver Dollar City, though he would never recognize himself for the deliberate artistic changes I’ve made.
This piece is ultimately a tribute to my father who found pleasure in working with wood. He even prepared the mahogany boards I use in painting.
