Behind the drawing

This drawing is taken from a photograph my father, Fred James, took of my sister Susan with Penny, one of our dogs.  I wasn’t happy with face of Penny in the photo, so I made up the face after researching numerous dogs.

At the time I drew it, I thought it would be an amusing twist to title the drawing after the pet rather than the child, but I regret it now. Susan’s name should associated to my work.

Susan James Niehans has been a brilliant, loving and supportive sister throughout our lives. However, since I moved to France in 1994, her help with my art career has been invaluable as my assistant in the US in any way, whenever and wherever I needed it. Without her generosity of time, care and expertise in organization, having a presence in the US and France would be impossible for me. A computer scientist by profession, she is also our family archivist and executor, as well as a talented craftsman and photographer.
